I wish I could just find a mind blowing Chinese take out place. I've tried Young's several times, and it's always just average. Typical Chinese food. I don't remember what I've tried from here because it all tasted the same to me. They give you a ton of food, but most of the time the leftovers just end up sitting in my fridge.

I would have given 4 stars because it's REALLY good and fast Chinese Food... but with all these people hating like they were expecting it to change their lives I had to give it an extra star. this place has never failed, in the 11 times I've ordered from them. HATERS gonna hate, but this place is good eats for the price.

Ordered sweet and sour chicken and found a piece of metal in rice. When I called them to let them know so no one else almost eats metal. They were really rude about it. I wasn't asking for refund just wanted to inform them. I won't eat here again!!!

And my search for yummy Chinese food in Detroit continues! This place looked interesting enough, and I'm always convinced that holes in the wall have pretty decent food. I liked the crab rangoon appetizers and the spring rolls that came with the meal. Fried rice was good too. I had the Szechuan chicken which was nothing special. Service was fast, but I wasn't too enthused about the food to be honest. At least I finally got to try this place!

Young's is standard Chinese food. I think it's pretty consistent and as good as any other place in the area. Huge portions. Takeout only. It's not a 5 star, they don't exist in Oakland County. Let me know if you find a 5 star!

    (3)
  • Robert D.

Bland, tasteless pork lo mein. Crab rangoons were terrible. Almond chicken was simply mushy breaded chicken and I didn't notice a single almond.

I live in Royal Oak and I love this place. I get carry-out a couple times a month from Young's. I always have enough for three meals from one order. I get the chicken and broccoli most often. It has fat mushrooms, good rice and pea pods (which I give to my Jack Russell). The combo features enough food for three, an egg roll with a little tub of delicious sauce, and a fortune cookie! The food is consistently good here and the best price in town. The owner is a dear man who is very shy, but not unfriendly. He has come to recognize my voice on the phone and even laughs with me now. He and his wife are simple, hard working and honest business people who grapple with a different culture and language...and folks who can be impatient and a little rude.

Sorry for the bad rating butI have been there about 4 times. The food seems to get worse every time. I will have to find another Chinese take out place. I have had much better where I used to live.

  • Nina C.

Best Chinese food hands down anywhere!! Any city any state- the best!! 2 things that blow though- no delivery and no restaurant just take out!! But these people know what's up!!!!

Stopped by this place for the first time yesterday evening. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken dinner combo (comes with an egg roll, fried rice and fortune cookie) for $7.25. It was pretty tasty. And, more than enough for 2 leftover meals. Bonus. Have I had better? Yeah. Have I had worse? Yeah. Would I go back? Definitely. Great price, overly large portions, and fairly yummy.

OK they hit on some good points and miss on others. they always have hot, fluffy just fried almond boneless chicken and sweet and sour chicken. the batter is always good and it never seems like other places that haven't cleaned the oil in a decade. they have good chop suey .....i know some of you won't eat this american made concoction, but i like it. a little history--- it actually was created in new york to satisfy the guys working on the first skyscrapers. another up side. they share a parking lot with the party store next door and nothing goes better with take out chinese than a forty ounce beer. makes for a good saturday afternoon. the place gets 3 stars because really it doesn't blow my doors off. I eat a lot of chinese and its just ok. most royal oakers swear by this place and i think its more nostalga or hangover than anything else. the down side--the people behind the counter are just rude. and the weird supplements for sale confuse me. love, juston

Not bad, but not great. It's pretty much your standard Chinese carry-out. Always piping hot food that is really fresh and not lacking in portion. It's location can't get any better being right on 11 between Main and Campbell. It always has a few people waiting for their order no matter the time of day. The food is decent, what you'd expect from a run of the mill Chinese place. I've had countless dishes here and all have been satisfactory. Yesterday, I ordered Egg Foo Yung, which was a massive order for only $6. I didn't eat half of it. One of my favorite things to get, especially in the winter, is egg drop soup. For $2.50/quart it hits the spot and you have plenty for seconds later on. Cheap, quick, easy. If you live around the area and don't want to venture too far, it hits the spot. Don't expect the best carry-out ever. Just expect a decent meal for a decent price.

  • Dave M.

Very very not bad. It is what it is--Chinese take-out, inexpensive, super quick. The guy behind the counter is as friendly as can be. We've tried the General Tso, which I really liked. Egg drop soup got thumbs up from the kids. Lo mein-decent. Better than several other carryout joints around town.

I tried Young's for the first time last weekend and I am a fan. The almond chicken dinner was a good size and it was up very quickly, even though they had other customers. My friend got some wonton soup and he loved it.

I am very surprised by the Yelpers who gave Young's a bad rating. I know not everyone's tastes are the same, but I have been a loyal customer ever since they opened 20 years ago and I don't think I or anyone in my family has ever had a bad meal from this joint. The prices run about the same as most Chinese places, i.e. $8-10 per entree. I guess my only pet peeve is that the food is rarely ready when they say it will be. If they say 20 minutes, it's 25-30, etc. And there really isn't much to do there while you're waiting, cuz it's a hole in the wall. But again, love their food, especially the spicy stuff, which is my favorite. They can make ANY dish spicy if you ask. The owners are friendly. I imagine they are a husband-and-wife team. I guess that any Chinese food place that has been in business since 1992, in the competitive corridor that they're in, must be doing something right!

  • Sarah B.

It baffles me that people rave about Young's. I have tried the food on several occasions and it is miles behind other Chinese places in the area. The vegetables are often overcooked and are lacking in variety (ordered Szechuan chicken and it only came with celery and onions?) The prices are reasonable, however.

I got clued into this place when I was working the occasional night production shift at a local newspaper. Decent food, generous portions, and reasonable prices...making it a good choice for hungry and always broke newspaper folks! We've ordered from here a few times in the years since I worked at the papers and find we can call the order in, drive the 3 miles to pick it up, and get back home with the food inside of half an hour. And our dinner is fresh and still piping hot when we dish it out. One dinner is more than enough for two to split...get two dinners and you'll have meals enough to last a couple of days at least. Dishes like hot & sour soup, szechuan shrimp, and Mongolian Beef are nicely spicy, and the menu has plenty of the typical milder American-style Chinese dishes if that's your thing. This place is strictly a bare-bones take-out joint, but when you want fast, hot, and tasty Chinese, it will fill the bill. Best I've had of standard Chinese restaurants (eat in or take out) around here, and better than many of the pretentious "gourmet" Chinese places I've eaten as well.

    (4)
  • Adam C.

Not bad. I got the beef bok choy. It was pretty good but I was a little disappointed that the bok choy was all stem and no leaf. The quantity was huge so I'll get two meals out of it. Overall, nothing to rave about but good enough that I would get it again.

  • Chue L.

This place is horrible.. There fried rice is bland. There sweet and sour chicken was horrible. It tasted reheated.. Never going back to this nasty place.

    (1)
  • Amy S.

They have great egg rolls. Stay safe and get the almond boneless chicken and the egg drop. Can't really go wrong with those. It's typical Michigan Chinese food.

    (3)
  • Amanda W.

This place is pretty cool. Had lunch combo takeout, and was pleasantly surprised. Big portions, great prices, and excellent service. The carryout was packaged perfectly, and included utensils and such. I will eat here again, and would recommend. It's next door to the State Farm office ~

    (4)
  • Jennifer B.

Probably one of the worst Chinese takeout orders I have ever had. Rice was way over cooked and hard. I had the chicken and vegetables and the chicken had a weird taste to it. The only thing I ate out of the whole thing was the water chestnuts, broccoli, and fortune cookie! Even the egg roll was bad.

    (2)
  • Stewart B.

Abc chicken usually solid. The egg rolls are tasty sometimes times greasy, they're deep fried. Chicken fried rice good as well, sesame chicken can be hit or miss. I usually order double msg, #middle name is danger

  • Cantonite P.

Lunch specials are plentiful and your basic everyday Fast Food Chinese. Young's has been around ever since I've been alive and no, it's not fine Asian cuisine, it's your standard take out place with greasy Chinese food. When you're in the mood for an Americanized standby, this is the place to go. No dining in, but you always get tons of hot, decent food to go and I used to come here once a week when I worked in the area. Lunch combos are the way to go. Nothing dramatically special, but compared to such places as Golden Wheel, this is a tried- and true Royal Oak classic.

    (4)
  • Jim R.

I enjoy Young's. I live down the street and usually get take-out here. The food is cheap, consistent and usually well portioned.

    (4)
  • Phoebe J.

I live in NYC right off Canal Street- and I'm a freakin Chinese feign! When we visit Detroit this is a "first stop." Their Szechuan Chicken is fresh and amazing. Their egg rolls are fried wraps of heaven. They are fast, friendly and family owned. Bravo.

    (5)
  • Lisa P.

I've been living in the Royal Oak area for about 5 years now, and this is the most convenient Chinese restaurant I've been able to find. Pro's- free parking off the street (sometimes I just don't feel like messing with downtown Royal Oak parking), they're very quick, the food's ok Con's- The food, as I mentioned, is just "ok." The soups are pretty flavorless, the fried rice is ok, as are most of the dishes. It's edible, but it never does a good job of hitting the spot when I have a craving for good Chinese food.

    (3)
  • TJ C.

Coming from New York all of the bad reviews sounded exactly like greasy Chinese fast food. My girlfriend and I ordered $30 in food and ended up throwing it all away, only the crab Rangoon was edible. The vegetable rolls were disgusting, the general Tao chicken was so loaded with salt it burned your mouth and left me with a headache, there were no noodles in the vegetable lo mein, and they use a ginger sauce for sweet and sour instead of the red sauce.

    (1)
  • Jason H.

This is one of the best take out Chinese Places in Oakland county. The portions are huge and the price is cheap. If you like greasy Chinese food than this is the place. Make sure you try the egg drop soup!

    (5)
  • Ted H.

What's wrong with this place? Poor quality all around, although the fried rice is serviceable. General's chicken - normal battered and fried pieces - that's not how general's is supposed to be! Almond Boneless with 2 gallons of a strange clear sauce on it. The breading is really bad here... Soggy, falls off, and inside reveals spongy, microwave thawed chicken barely worth eating. I'd avoid this place at all costs, even if your standards for Chinese are very low, this will undercut those standards! Frankly, since King's Wok close down Royal Oak has been nothing but a Chinese Restaurant disappointment! Better off sticking with Cam's in Berkley, Lim's or Mui's in Clawson.

    (1)
  • Patrick N.

This place is pretty gross which is a shame because it's convenient as far as location and they do give you a fair amount of food for the price you pay. The biggest problem I have with this place is the food. I'm almond boneless, sweet and sour, egg roll having white bread americana type chinese food consumer. The breading on the food here is mushy and falls off super easily. The chicken tastes a bit dry and stiff, as if it was thawed in a microwave without the defrost option. The rice I had was bland and unforgiving. Every time I get food from this place I regret it half way through eating it. The left overs always get chucked as the food here does not mature well in the fridge. Pay the extra dollar or two and go to peking house or kam's.

    (2)
  • Joe O.

Fair prices, but really not the best tasting chinese food I've had. Might suit others taste, but egg roll was too greasy and house special fried rice was full of celery and not enough meat.

    (1)
  • Kristine R.

A great go-to for cheap Chinese food. If you're looking for gourmet, don't come here. If you're looking for hole in the wall, greasy, "I feel like being "bad" food, this is your place. The almond boneless chicken is ~ to die for. I've, admittedly, never had anything else. But the almond boneless chicken alone is enough to keep bringing me back.

  • Jess B.

I remember eating at a specific Chinese food place as a kid. That place has since changed owners and is not the same. I've since been searching for a restaurant that had the same almond chicken as I ate as a kid. I finally found the place! Why a 4? The almond chicken was good, the egg roll was good, the fried rice was ok. The fried rice was basically white rice drenched in soy sauce, nothing fancy. Their almond chicken was breasts breaded and fried, with almonds sprinkled on it. The sauce is a brown mushroom sauce, which is my favorite. $10 gets you the combo and it is easily, 2 meals of food. My husband had sweet and sour. He said it was good. I didn't eat it, so can't rate it. I like that it's not fancy Asian infusion. It's just Chinese food and sometimes, that's all I want. It's a small place that is take out only. Simple, not fancy. I was definitely not disappointed. Give it a try, it's worth it.

  • Ali A.

Tried the food for the first time. Ignored the bad reviews on yelp. Big mistake. Had general tao 's chicken, shrimp lo mein and hot and sour soup. Had to eat left over haloween candy for dinner. This food was surprisingly inedible. Do not touch the place.

  • Tamara Y.

I went to this place after reading a few reviews. For me, the jury is still out, and I'll need to do a little more "field research" before I can reach a definative conclusion. I agree with Juston M. that the place is a little hit or miss. The almond chicken was good. The shrimp fried rice was just ok. The guy behind the counter wasn't the friendliest soul on earth.

    (3)
  • Robert C.

Wish I could say that this place blew my socks off with colossal amounts of cheap wonderful food, but alas, we left a bit underwhelmed. Girlfriend and I were craving Chinese, and figured we'd try this place. We got sweet and sour chicken and egg drop soup - fairly safe bets from your average Chinese place. It was ready before long - nice work with that. However, the chicken seemed like nothing special - just seemed like some same-ol' breaded chicken in some uninspired sweet and sour sauce. The egg drop soup was also exceptionally salty, coming from a human who adores egg drop soup and is well-versed in its intricacies (the lady). There is a small amount of seating inside, btw. Maybe six seats at a counter. It would appear that our search for good Chinese in the area continues. Zut alors!

I don't know how people eat here more than once. I spent 25 dollars on dinner from here, took two bites of mine and two bites of my girlfriends and then I threw it all away and had cereal. The breading was soggy and just fell off the chicken, it also had zero flavor. I'm not a food snob and frequently use yelp for recommendation so here is mine.... Go hungry if you have to but don't eat here

  • Pete D.

My office is just down the street on eleven mile in Royal Oak, less the a mile. This is a carry out only, with a limited menu. I really like chinese I mean I REALLY like chinese. But I can't like this place. I been in my building since 1995 I have gone to this place 5 times, in all these years I have never had a good meal or even just ok meal. My wife won't eat there at all, for any reason. I triy this place every two year or so,when I'm very short on time and have the need to get a fix. I go there with hope that it will be good. May be something has changed. NO some old pre-cooked rewarmed greasy food. But that's the good part. The owner is less the nice. I asked to get some hot sauce and you would think that I asked he to wash the windows (which would be a good idea). I'm not sure how old the food is or how long it sets. Not a fan,

    (2)
  • Ian P.

This is by far the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Way too greasy, meat is rubbery, etc. I didnt expect much from a cheap Chinese take out restaurant and it still managed to disappoint. Do yourself a favor and go to Bangkok Cafe in Ferndale. Cheap, fast and infinitely better!

    (1)
  • Davis G.

It's amusing the reviews that say they don't like this place, but most of them say they've gone back several times. This isn't the London Chop House, friends. It's a sweet little Chinese takeout place, and the food and friendliness are both great. If we're in the mood for Chinese take out, this is our go-to place. We've gone there for years. Check out the awards they've gotten that they scotch tape to the counter.. Once more, it's not about flash, it's about substance. If you hate it. don't go back.. We go there all the time. I'm eating the sweet and sour chicken right now,

When we lived in Mount Clemens our favorite America-Chinese food carry out was China 1 on Cass. We've since moved away and they've since closed. It's been years since we've been able to find a replacement. A sweet and sour chicken with the gelatinous sauce. An egg roll that actually tastes deep fried. Fried rice that is rich. We know it's not authentic Chinese food, but sometimes you get a craving for a fast-food version of American-Chinese food, and Young's hits the nail on the head! Flavorful, plentiful and as fresh as this type of food can be.

Disgusting. Incredibly greasy and hi msg. I felt like I ate a salt-lick afterward.

Great food for Chinese carry out. Huge fan of their chicken subgum chow mein. Any dishes with sauce I highly recommend getting on the side. Not open on Mondays.

  • Chris M.

One of the best secrets in Royal Oak. I'm here 1-2 times a week. It's fast, cheap, good, and the portions are enough for two. They have all the standards-sweet & sour, almond, and mixed veggies. Try the Wonton Soup-cheap and filling. The Chicken Subgum chowmain is my favorite. The owners are always friendly and you rarely have to wait long. They just started taking credit card so there's no reason to not stop here. Enjoy

  • Laura K.

This might be the worst Chinese food I've ever had.. I got the Sesame Chicken, which she refused to substitute into a dinner portion. They have very limited selections for their lunch/dinner "packages". The chicken I got was undercooked, the breading was oily and sweet somehow, and it wouldn't even stay on the chicken itself.

    (1)
  • Patrick P.

Good food, quality chicken, large servings and fair prices. Not PF Changs for sure but is the best around for what it is, fast good Chinese takeout.

  • Anthony P.

Moved near this place and the family loves Chinese food, so we decided to give this place a try. We ordered Sweet and Sour Pork, Sesame Chicken, and General Tsao's Chicken. The best thing about the place is that the food is done fast, so you're not waiting too long after you order your food. The next best thing is their sweet and sour sauce. The sweet and sour sauce is very delicious, and well above average. Unfortunately, the pork meat itself was rather poor and very dry, even for pork. However, the chicken is fluffy and flavorful, and I'm sure their sweet and sour chicken is an above average dish. What I disliked more than anything was their sesame and General Tsao's flavorings. First of all, there was no discernible difference in flavor between the two, which was disappointing. Even more disappointing is that neither sauce tasted very good, and had the consistency of a gravy, something I've never experienced with either sauce. Some may like it that way, I wouldn't really know, but I do not. It's worth a try, and I'm sure giving the menu a more thorough rundown would bring out some good meals, but Sesame Chicken is my favorite Chinese food dish, and this place does not deliver a good one in my opinion.

With-out a doubt, BEST THEIR IS!! I grew up about 20 mintues away from Youngs, and had never had it until I met my husband who's a Royal Oak native. He SWORE by Youngs! I've had Chinese from Macomb, Oakland, even downtown Detroit, and NOTHING compares to Youngs! We've tried to find a closer restaurant for a couple years, and they've all failed miserably. I honestly would drive 40 mintues away fr Youngs! They're Genereal Tsao's chicken is the best I've ever had. It's tangy and has a very nice kick to it, not sweet like other places. They're Hot and Sour Soup is also pretty good, better ten some Thai restaurants. I've never had a bad meal here anytime! If your looking for GREAT Chinese food, Go To Youngs!

    (5)
  • Michael G.

I've been a regular at Young's for the past 4 years and have never had a bad meal. I'm partial to the Almond Chicken & Egg Drop Soup. Nice owners who certainly remember the regulars. This place is a HUGE leap above any typical NY Style Fast Food Chinese place.

    (4)
  • Mandy Y.

Very friendly owners. They serve the best Almond Chicken. I love them and I will miss now that I live in Howell. They also have super yummy egg-rolls and sizzling rice soup! Haven't had a bad meal!

  • Matthew P.

I have no clue what Chris M. is talking about. I gave this place more than 1 star to be nice. One word for this food: GARBAGE This may be one of the worst Chinese carry out places in the area. Don't bother!

    (2)
  • Kaveh N.

So take-out Chinese is not my favorite genre of food, but within this genre Young's is excellent. You call ahead and it's ready in 10 mins, it's always fresh and hot, and they definitely give you big enough portions for a reasonable price. If you want to bring some Chinese food home, what more could you ask for?

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
